Resolving Numerical Anomalies in Scientific Computation
نویسنده
چکیده
The increasing numbers of large scientific computer systems in use, together with the rapidly increasing scale of computations being attempted on such systems, means that numerical anomalies pose a growing threat to the soundness of these computations. This note presents a number of examples of common numerical anomalies that can arise, illustrated by some actual computer programs available on a website, together with a discussion of how these problems could be mitigated with improved software tools. ∗Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA, [email protected]. Asymptotic solution of ultrasonic near-field levitation problem
Ultrasonic near-field levitation allows suspension of a moderately large object at a height of tens of microns above sound actuator. We developed an asymptotic approach to describe the air dynamics in the gap between an acoustic source and the levitating object. The suggested method allows computation of the lifting force. Due to resolving of both viscous and inertial effects, it remains applic...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Parallel Computing of Cloud Resolving Storm Simulator
A sever thunderstorm is composed of strong convective clouds. In order to perform a simulation of this type of storms, a very fine-grid system is necessary to resolve individual convective clouds within a large domain. Since convective clouds are highly complicated systems of the cloud dynamics and microphysics, it is required to formulate detailed cloud physical processes as well as the fluid ...
متن کاملA surface spherical harmonic expansion of gravity anomalies on the ellipsoid
A surface spherical harmonic expansion of gravity anomalies with respect to a geodetic reference ellipsoid can be used to model the global gravity field and reveal its spectral properties. In this paper, a direct and rigorous transformation between solid spherical harmonic coefficients of the Earth’s disturbing potential and surface spherical harmonic coefficients of gravity anomalies in ellips...
متن کاملMathematical Modeling of Gas Adsorption Processes in Packed Bed: The Role of Numerical Methods on Computation Time
Rigorous mathematical modeling of adsorption processes in packed beds involves time-consuming computations which are considered as the fundamental weakness of such thorough mathematical models. Thus, reducing the computation time was a key factor in improving adsorption mathematical models. In order to achieve this goal, an attempt was made to know how much using different numerical methods inf...
متن کاملRayleigh–Taylor instability of immiscible fluids in porous media
The time development of an interface separating two immiscible fluids of different densities in heterogeneous two-dimensional porous media is studied. The governing equations are simplified with the help of approximate Green’s functions which allow computation of the shape of the interface directly without resolving the fluid flow in the entire domain. The new formulation is amenable to numeric...
